RS-VCV 9.1 BECEJ GRAD BICIKLOVA (Becej)

Becej is typical, multinational town in Vojvodina, more than 900 years
old,
situated on right bank of river Tisa. There are a numerous cultural
historical
monuments, more than 12 different nationalities and it is an example of
tolerant
town in the heart of Vojvodina. Bicycle is really popular in Becej as a
transporting vehicle. Even in "old" Yugoslavia, Becej was the place
with the
highest number of bicycles per capita. There is an initiative from
local
municipality and local tourist organisation for bicycle to become a
souvenir
and trademark of Becej. This workcamp should improve the idea and set
things on
a higher level by creating 30 new bicycles out of old ones. You can

W: Volunteers will work on reparation, reforming and repairing the old
bicycles,
their promotion, riding them around the town... Volunteers will also be
involved
in preparation of intercultural evenings in the park, parties, and film
projections.
S: Various workshops, pool and Tisa river visits, excursions by bikes
to
»Fantast« lake and castle and the nearby town Novi Becej. Volunteers
will visit
orthodox and catholic churches, cultural centre and town hall.
A: Workcamp will be situated in the centre of the biggest park in
Becej, under
the tents. Sleeping bags are necessary. Breakfast and dinner will be
made by
volunteers, lunch will be provided by host. Showers and toilettes are
nearby.

X: Please bring some characteristic games and/or food from your
country. Bring
working gloves, sleeping bags, swimming suit and sun protection. Sense
of
humour is more than welcome!

The Ciclofficina (bicycle workshop) "Don Chisciotte" works at "Ex-Snia
Viscosa"
(a so-called "social centre"). It is an old factory (abandoned since
1950)
located in a sub urban area of Rome. The bicycle workshop started 4
years ago
and its aims is to promote urban bicycling in Rome, city overcrowded
with
cars. In order to reach its aim, the "ciclofficina" recycles used and
dismissed bikes and gives to everybody the chance to repair his/her own
bike,
giving technical means and help. In this way it's possible to exchange
many
technical information and also to share a message of environmental
sustainability. The workshop is going to organize a European bike
workshops
forum from 23rd to 25th of May at Ex- Snia Viscosa, just few days
before the
4th annual International Critical Mass that will be held in Rome from
the 25th
to the 27th of May. Volunteers will be involved in several jobs: forum
organization, logistics, advertising, help the mechanics in daily work
in
"ciclofficina". The volunteers will have the chance to participate to
the forum
meetings and bike repairing sessions. The camp will end with a big
party on
Friday evening and in the last 2 days volunteers will be able to
participate to
"Critical Mass" if they want.
